A trip to South Africa
When Botswana achieved independence from the British and became their own country in 1966, there was no capital city outside of South Africa, so they established Gaborone literally just outside the South African border. It's a quick 15-min jaunt to the border and an easy 4 hr drive to Johannesburg, which is quite convenient when we wanted to go to the temple and visit our colleagues at the Area Office. Our trainers, the Gattens, served an 18-month mission in the Area Office, so they knew just where to take us for lovely safe accommodations and tremendous food.
We stayed in gorgeous hotels and ate lunch at an exquisite culinary school.
First stop in South Africa was to a huge and well-stocked tourist shop.
Thanks to our excellent trainers, the trip to Johannesburg was highly rewarding and a great getaway.
But after a couple of days, I was happy enough to leave the huge smoggy city behind and return to my quaint Gaborone Botswana where the happy, soft-spoken people are (mostly) gentle and the living is pleasant and easy.
